Ans. Lencho hoped for water in the form of rain.

Ans. As raindrops would have helped in getting a better harvest, resulting in more prosperity, so Lencho compared them with new coins.

Ans. The rain changed to a hailstorm. All the crops in the field were destroyed.

Ans. Lencho had faith in God. He wrote a letter to God asking for help.

Ans. Lencho had written a letter to God to help him with money. The postmaster didn't want to shake Lencho faith in God. So he collected money and sent it to him on behalf of God.

Ans. No, Lencho was not surprised to find a letter for him with money in it. 

नहीं, रुपयों के साथ पत्र प्राप्त होने पर लैंचो को आश्चर्य नहीं हुआ।

Ans. Seeing the amount less than his requirement, made him angry.

Thinking About the Text 

Q. 1. Who does Lencho have complete faith in? What sentences in the story tell you this? 

(लैंचो को किसमें पूरा विश्वास है? कहानी के कौन-से वाक्य आपको यह बताते हैं?) 

Ans. Lencho had faith in help from God. The following sentences in the story tell us this: 

(i) Lencho thought only of his one hope; the help of God. 

(ii) "God", he wrote, "if you don't help me, my family and I will go hungry this year." 

लैंचो को ईश्वर से मदद मिलने पर पूरा विश्वास था। कहानी के निम्नलिखित वाक्य हमें यह बताते हैं- (i) लैंचो ने सिर्फ अपनी एक आशा के बारे में सोचा, ईश्वर से मदद। 

(ii) ईश्वर, उसने लिखा, “यदि आप मेरी मदद नहीं करेंगे, तो मेरा परिवार और मैं इस वर्ष भूखे रहेंगे।. 

 

Q. 2. Why does the Postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter 'God'? 

(पोस्टमास्टर लैंचो को धन क्यों भेजता है? पत्र पर वह 'ईश्वर' हस्ताक्षर क्यों करता है?) 

Ans. The postmaster did not want to shake Lencho's faith in God. Therefore, he sent money to Lencho which he had demanded from God. So, he signed the letter 'God'. It was a good play to convey a message that God himself had written the letter. 

पोस्टमास्टर, लैंचो का ईश्वर पर से विश्वास नहीं तोड़ना चाहता था। इसलिए उसने लैंचो को पैसे भेज दिए, जो लैंचो ने भगवान से माँगे थे। इसलिए उसने पत्र पर 'भगवान' के हस्ताक्षर किए। यह संदेश देने के लिए अच्छा नाटक था कि भगवान् ने खुद पत्र लिखा है।

 

Q. 3. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why or why not? 

(क्या लैंचो ने यह पता लगाने की कोशिश की किसने उसे पैसे भेजे थे? क्यों और क्यों नहीं?) 

Ans. Lencho did not try to find out who had sent the money to him because he never suspected the presence of God and had complete faith in God. He could not believe that it could be anybody else other than him who would send him the money. His faith in God was so strong that he believed that he had sent money to him for his help in his problem.

लैंचो ने यह पता लगाने की कोशिश नहीं की, कि किसने उसे पैसे भेजे थे क्योंकि उसे भगवान पर दृढ़ विश्वास था और उसने कभी भगवान के होने पर संदेह नहीं किया। वह विश्वास नहीं कर सकता था कि ईश्वर के अलावा कोई और हो सकता है जो उसे पैसे भेजेगा। उसका विश्वास ईश्वर में इतना अटूट था कि उसने मान लिया कि ईश्वर ने उसकी मदद करने के लिए उसे पैसे भेजे

 

Q. 4. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected). 

(लैंचो किसके बारे में सोचता है कि उसने शेष धन रख लिया है? इस परिस्थिति में क्या विडम्बना है?) 

Ans.

Lencho thinks that the post office employees have taken the rest of the money as he had demanded a hundred pesos from God and in the letter there was only seventy pesos and God cannot make such a mistake. So, he assumes that they have stolen the money. The irony in this situation is that Lencho suspects those people who helped him in his problem and tried to keep his faith alive in God. 

लैंचो सोचता है कि डाकघर के कर्मचारियों ने शेष धनराशि ले ली होगी क्योंकि उसने ईश्वर से सौ पीसोज़ माँगे थे और पत्र मे केवल सत्तर पीसोज़ थे और ईश्वर गलती नहीं कर सकता। इसलिए, उसने मान लिया कि कर्मचारियों ने पैसे चुराए हैं। परिस्थिति की विडम्बना यह है कि लैंचो उन लोगों पर शक कर रहा है जिन्होंने उसकी मदद की और ईश्वर में उसका विश्वास बनाए रखने की कोशिश की। 

 

Q.5. Are there people like Lencho in the real world? What kind of a person would you say he is? You may select appropriate words from the box to answer the question.

Ans. In India one can find many people like Lencho in the real world. In the true sense, Lencho is a naive and stupid but not comic fellow. He is quite ignorant of worldly events. He is not greedy and selfish. Like an innocent person, he has firm faith in God. In reality he is an unquestioned worshipper and follower of God. He also thanks God for help. So he is not ungrateful. 

भारत में लैंचो जैसे अनेक व्यक्ति वास्तविक रूप में मिल जाएंगे। सही अर्थों में लैंचो सीधा-सादा और मूर्ख व्यक्ति है किन्तु अनोखा/मजाकिया नहीं। वह सांसारिक घटनाओं से पूरी तरह अनजान है। वह लालची और स्वार्थी नहीं है। एक निष्कपट व्यक्ति की भाँति उसका ईश्वर में दृढ़ विश्वास है। यथार्थ में वह ईश्वर का निर्विवादित भक्त और अनुयायी है। वह मदद के लिए ईश्वर को धन्यवाद भी देता है। अत: वह कृतघ्न नहीं है। 

 

Q.6. There are two kinds of conflict in the story : between humans and nature, and between humans themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated? 

(कहानी में दो प्रकार के संघर्ष हैं-एक मानवों और प्रकृति के बीच में और दूसरा स्वयं मानवों के बीच में। इन संघर्षों का चित्रण किस प्रकार किया गया है?) 

Ans. The conflict between humans and nature is shown by the destruction of Lencho's crops by the hailstorm. As the crops failed by hail, Lencho started feeling sad and gloomy after the storm appropriately projects the conflict of the nature and the man. The story also shows another conflict between human themselves. The. Postmaster, along with the help of other employees, sent collected money to Lencho. It was an act of kindness and selflessness on their part. Even though they did a good deed, Lencho blamed them for taking away some amount of money. This shows that man does not have faith in his fellow humans, thereby giving rise to this conflict.

मानवों और प्रकृति के बीच का संघर्ष ओलावृष्टि द्वारा लैंचो की फसल नष्ट होने, से दिखाया गया है। तूफान के बाद ओलावृष्टि द्वारा फसलें खराब होने पर, लैंचो दु:खी और उदास हो गया, जो उचित रूप से प्रकृति और मानव के संघर्ष का कारण दर्शाता है। कहानी मानव-मानव के बीच के संघर्ष को भी दिखाती है। पोस्टमास्टर, अपने साथ के कर्मचारियों की मदद से, लैंचो को इकट्ठे किए पैसे भेजता है। यह उनकी ओर से दया और निस्वार्थता का कार्य था। अच्छे कर्म करने के बावजूद भी लैंचो उन पर कुछ पैसे रख लेने का दोष लगाता है। यह दर्शाता है कि आदमी को अपने साथ के लोगों पर विश्वास नहीं है, जोकि संघर्ष का कारण है।
